Home Physiotherapy Visits

Physiotherapy home visits are available for patients who are unable, or find it particularly difficult, to attend a physiotherapist’s rooms.

Home visits are generally most appropriate for patients with significant mobility limitations, including patients who are bedridden, wheelchair users, or whose condition makes travelling to an outpatient practice particularly difficult or physically demanding.

Each request for a home visit is assessed individually to determine whether a home-based consultation is appropriate and whether the necessary treatment can be safely provided in the patient’s home. The environment must also be suitable and safe for both the patient and the physiotherapist.

A home visit may also be requested by patients who are able to attend a practice but prefer to receive treatment at home. However, home visits are a private service and may attract additional costs, depending on the circumstances and the patient’s medical aid benefits.

Medical Aid and Fees

This is a private physiotherapy practice and patients remain responsible for payment of their accounts, including any portion not covered by their medical aid.

Medical aids do not necessarily cover home visits at the same rate as treatment provided at a physiotherapist’s rooms. Depending on the medical aid, the treatment provided and the applicable coding, an additional home-visit fee may apply. For example, code 72903 may attract an additional charge of approximately R239.20 to R279.30 or more. The amount payable and whether the fee is covered will depend on the individual medical aid and its applicable benefits and tariffs.

The use of a home-visit code is determined according to the treatment provided and applicable billing requirements. Patients are therefore encouraged to check their benefits with their medical aid before booking a home visit.

While we will assist patients in working with their medical aids wherever possible, the final decision regarding whether a home visit is covered remains with the medical aid. Patients remain responsible for settling their account regardless of whether their medical aid subsequently pays, partially pays or declines the claim.

Home Visit Distance

Home visits are generally provided within a reasonable travelling distance of the practice. Distance from Randburg is used as a general guide when assessing whether a home visit can be accommodated.

Patients residing more than approximately 16 km from Randburg may incur an additional travelling or transport fee in accordance with applicable SASP guidelines. Any such fee will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and discussed with the patient before the appointment where possible.

Referrals and Suitability

A referral letter from your doctor is preferred for home-based physiotherapy and may assist in determining whether a home visit is appropriate.

The practice reserves the right to determine whether a patient can be accommodated for a home visit. This decision will take into consideration the patient’s clinical needs, location, safety, treatment requirements and the practicalities of providing physiotherapy in the home environment.

If you are unsure whether a home visit is suitable for you, please contact the practice to discuss your requirements.
